When to Use Fog Lamps

There has been some confusion for many new drivers (as well as for seasoned drivers who don’t pay close attention to their automotive manuals!) regarding when to use fog lamps. In fact, many drivers don’t realize what that light switch position is on the way to turning on their regular headlights! The fact is, fog lights are a very important safety feature of all vehicles and need to be used properly in order to keep visibility as high as possible in adverse weather conditions.

For drivers who aren’t even sure where there fog lamps are on their vehicle, these lights are the slanted, lamps on the front of the car-not to be confused with the driving lamps that sometimes come on automatically in new car and truck models. Some accessory buyers believe that fog lights are necessarily yellow; but companies such as Hella produce these lamps in both yellow and white for their truck and SUV clients.

The most ideal time to use fog lights is when you are driving through fog (obviously), light rain, dust or snow; if you turn these lights on during other weather conditions, you run the risk of causing a glare for other drivers. The reason why fog lamps are so effective is that they shine light directly onto the roadway’s surface, rather than outward.
