Chesapeake Bay Retriever: A Romantic History

retrieverThe Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a popular dog. It is friendly and affectionate. It is good with kids. It is loyal to the family. It listens well to directions. It is easy to train. It is a smart dog. But none of these great traits are the reason that I really like the Chesapeake Bay Retriever. What I like about this breed of dog is the romantic history behind its story.

You see, the entire breed of dog started out with just two dogs. They were both Newfoundland dogs that were on a ship that sunk back in the early nineteenth century. The two dogs were both rescued from the ship. They spent the rest of their lives mating with a bunch of other breeds to produce a new breed of dogs.

Now that may not sound romantic to everyone. However, I think it has the making of a true romance. A shipwreck. The sacrifice of their own relationship with one another to carry on the breed. It’s a love story in the making. Or perhaps I’m just a hopeless romantic and see romance everywhere. Still, I think it’s a neat story to know if you’re someone who happens to own a Chesapeake Bay Retriever.

A bunch of other breeds? Well, which ones? They couldn’t just have different mates all the time…someone must have been coordinating it all somehow.

Yeah, I agree with the above comment. And besides, it’s not really a case of true romance because according to you the dogs didn’t mate with each other.
