Cosmetic Reflections

In my early twenties I worked as secretary in a surgical office. The office was divided between cosmetic procedures and medical patients. So on any given day the physician’s assistants would deal with a breast augmentation patient or someone needing their gallbladder removed. One of the assistants was perusing her masters in a health science program and often spent her lunch breaks studying.

My main job was answering phones, setting appointments and calling insurance companies to verify coverage. I enjoyed helping the patients and even considered some health science universities about their degree programs. I also considered the physician assistant online degree because of the stability in the health care job market.

The health care market seems to be recession proof. You can cut back on clothing, entertainment and Christmas gifts, but healthcare is essential. My aunt was a nurse for nearly thirty years and she was always employed. Some of my friends have entered into the health care field and all of them are still employed.

I worked at the surgery office for a few years and enjoyed my experience. I learned a lot about insurance coverage and cosmetic surgery procedures, but mainly I learned about the longevity of the healthcare industry.
