What to Wear to a Culinary Arts Training Program

A large number of people who attend a culinary arts training program do so in a location other than their hometown. For example, someone from Oregon might opt to attend the Sacramento Kitchen Academy. As they go to pack their bags for the move to a new place, many students wonder what type of clothes to bring along with them.

Here are some of the things you’ll want to consider when packing your closet to head off to culinary school:

  • The clothes you wear in class will probably be assigned by the school. The school will either provide, or inform you that you need to get, a jacket and pants specifically for chefs. They’ll also tell you what kind of apron you’ll need.
  • Remember to pack shoes that you can stand in all day long. The school may have some rules or guidelines on this as well but the keyword to remember is "sensible".
  • Take nice clothes for going out to restaurants. Either as part of your education or just because it’s what classmates in cooking schools do together, you’ll be going out to eat at nice places so don’t forget the dress clothes.
  • Consider the weather. As always, when you relocate, you need to remember to pack the clothes that you own which will be appropriate to the weather in the area where you are moving.

Take the clothes that you’ll need but don’t overdo it. After you get settled into the routine of your cooking school you can get anything else that you might need.
