Dual Diagnosis Drug Treatment

Drug rehab has been in the news a lot recently. I always thought that rehab was for people who had been partying too hard and ended up overdoing it which resulted in addiction. But seemingly there is another side to it – dual diagnosis.

Dual diagnosis occurs when there is an addiction disorder with a co-occurring psychiatric disorder. So basically there are two problems occurring at the same time. From what I have discovered it is hard to diagnose as many treatment centers only focus on the addiction issue.

Treatment for dual diagnosis relies on an accurate diagnosis of the problems. Having both a mental illness and drug addiction problem requires the proper care and attention. Once there has been a diagnosis then the patient should seek out a dual diagnosis treatment facility.

In the past it was common for both problems to be treated separately. Today dual diagnosis treatment is finally becoming more common and both illnesses are treated at the same time.
