When my mother’s sister called the other day, I had no idea that I would soon become an expert in Florida alcohol treatment, both the facilities as well as their philosophies.

Unbeknown to Mom and I, my cousin had rapidly slipped into heavy alcohol dependency after he had been put on waivers from his minor league baseball team. He had been the pride of my Aunt on having been drafted right out of high school. My uncle had passed away many years ago, so the prospect of being able to pay for college was a remote one for them.

While he had several scholarships, his aptitude was not sufficient for post secondary education. With that in mind, he entered the farm leagues and worked hard to make it to “the show”. After a few years, however, it was apparent to all, but my cousin that he was never going to make it to the majors.

Slowly, reality crept into his consciousness, and self medicating with alcohol and drugs started. Before he knew it, his habits were affecting what little talent he had left on the field.

Caring deeply for both my cousin and my aunt, I personally took on the task of helping to find him the help he’d need to get back to a normal, productive, and happy life.
