Our Everchanging Plans to Remodel Our House

My husband and I have been talking about remodeling our house for three years now — since we moved in, basically.  We don’t want to do a total remodel — we like that it’s an old house, and don’t want to lose the character we get from things like the original wood trim, the clawfoot tub, and the old wooden kitchen cupboards — but there are certain things that we want to update.

Unfortunately, since we never actually carry out our plans, they are constantly changing.  Lately we’ve been talking about whether we should finish the hardwood floor first, rather than updating the kitchen as we’d planned.  The floors are deteriorating rapidly, and we’ve had to add another rug here and there to cover up the places where the finish has gone.  Then we’ll be free to put tile down in the bathroom and kitchen whenever we’re ready.

The only problem with this plan is, we don’t know how much it will cost to refinish our floors.   We are generally pretty dedicated bargain hunters, so we will need to start looking in order to figure out a price range and make sure we can afford to do the things we want to do to our house!

Oh, wow, congratulations in making the decision! I agree about starting with the floors. Hardwood floors are a little expensive and need to be dealt with first.

    Good luck!

I agree. Start with the hardwood floors first. Because that will surely put a dent on your savings.

I’m jealous. You have a clawfoot tub. I’ve always wanted one of those!

But anyway, yeah, it’s really hard to start a remodeling project. But once you start it, it’s hard to stop!

Yeah, if you want to get a good bargain, you better start looking. Ask among your friends. I’m sure they know someone who knows someone.

    Good luck!

    I love old houses!

But yeah it can be difficult to maintain and improve.

    Good luck with that!

Yeah, shop around for good bargains. Hardwood floors are not very cheap. Shop around for reviews also. Cheap labors cheap for nothing!

Ask around for recommendations. Word-of-mouth is always best.
