Where Your HOA Fees Go

When shopping for a home, one of the things to consider is how much you’ll be paying in HOA (homeowners association) fees. While some people resent these fees, the fact is that they are usually put to good use. Some examples of where your HOA fees might go include:
- Meetings. If there is food at the meetings, if the HOA has to rent out space for the meeting, etc. — all these things cost money.
- Organization. HOA management isn’t easy. Often the association has a lot of homeowners to keep track of, send reminders to, etc. Some type of group management software can help, but may cost the association money.
- Snow removal. If you own a condo, the HOA probably uses some of the money to hire plows to remove snow from the parking lot in the winter.
- Trash/recycling. If there are dumpsters in your condo’s parking lot, or if there are neighborhood recycling bins, most likely your HOA dues help pay for that.
It’s easy to gripe about HOA dues when you already have all these conveniences, but just think of how much of a headache it would be if you didn’t — not to mention how much more expensive it is to get someone to plow just your driveway, or pick up just your trash!
