What to Know Before Buying Plants for Your Yard

Simply buying a pretty plant and plopping it down into your yard is probably going to lead to a dead plant.  Plants have varying needs, requiring you to do some research before choosing what you are going to plant in your yard.  Here are some things you should know before buying a plant for your yard.

  • How much water the plant needs.  Does it need a moist environment, or only occasional watering?  If you know anything about phalaenopsis care, you know that some plants can be picky about how much water they get.  You don’t want to inadvertently drown your new plants!
  • How much sunlight the plant needs.  Does it need direct sunlight for most of the day, indirect sunlight, or does it prefer shade?  While many people think of all plants as requiring direct sunlight, cymbidium care requirements demonstrate that some plants actually prefer less direct sunlight.
  • What type of climate the plant prefers.  Some plants do better in a humid climate, while others prefer a drier climate.  Orchid flower care demonstrates that even different types of flower within the same group can have very different needs.

You can research plants by searching for information online, asking questions at your local nursery, or taking gardening classes.  However you go about doing it, just make sure that you know what plants are appropriate for your yard — and what care you need to give the plants you choose!
