Changing a Kids Room into a Teen Room

The transition from childhood into adolescence is marked by a number of different changes. The majority of these are emotional and social changes. However, there is also a big change in the style of the child at this time, a change which represents a shift towards defining himself and becoming an independent person. One of the ways that you will see this manifest is in the changing of his bedroom.

The transition from a kid’s bedroom to a teen’s bedroom can be marked by a variety of different things. The kids bedding may be replaced by teen bedding (such as skateboard bedding). The walls may be repainted to a darker or more vivid color. Posters or retro vinyl album covers may be hung on the wall to reflect the teen’s music interests.

This transition is important. The teen’s room is the one place in the house that is truly his own. It’s the place where he can define who he wants to be and how he sees himself. It is certainly important for parents to monitor what is happening in the teen’s room and to note any changes there that may provoke concerns (posters referencing drug use, for example) but for the most part the child should be allowed to transition to a teen room in a way that reflects his own style.
