Golf and Childhood Vacations

When I was young, we used to visit a resort in the Pocono Mountains every summer for our family reunion.  It was a great place, and I remember being very happy there.  I’ve gone back more recently, though, and I was surprised at how focused on golf the resort is — I don’t remember that from when I was a kid!

We pretty much ran wild all week when we visited this resort.  I remember some weeks spent at the children’s day camp, but I also remember other days full of swimming, cycling, hiking, visiting the resort’s little library, and playing in the hotel’s old cage elevator.  We were pretty much on our own, and just had to show up for mealtimes.

Many of our lunches were at the golf house, a clubhouse out between the lake and the golf course.  We’d often meet my grandpa and uncle there — I didn’t realize it then, but they must have been stopping there for lunch after golfing all morning.

There was a little golf store in the clubhouse.  From what I know now, I’m guessing those employees — who always seemed to impress my grandpa and uncle — probably had gone to a golf academy to get club certification, so that they could sell clubs and other golf equipment.  Since there are not enough opportunities for pro golf careers for all the folks who love golf, a golf career such as working in an upscale golf resort probably seems like a dream job!

I really miss that place — I hope I’ll get to go back there on vacation sometime soon!
